Our Story
The Nest Diner is a classic, 1950's style American diner. Manufactured in the post-World War II years by Mountain View Diners of Singac, New Jersey it reflects the period trend of attracting families to a new style of diner service: the table and booth service. The Nest still maintains its original fluorescent lights, stainless steel walls and terrazzo floors. The lingering influence of pre-war streamlining is seen in rounded corners and horizontal exterior detailing.
In these post-Attack on America years, as people refocus their priorities in life, and search for a happier, simpler time, diners are providing the solid heart-felt, comfort food and fond memories of another time. The Nest is an integral part of this community serving regulars as well as the annual summer residents, in this same location for nearly than forty years.
In 2001, after seeing an ad in the paper and seeking a new challenge, current owners Barbara and Randy St. John purchased The Nest Diner. Since both Barbara and Randy have an extensive background in food and beverage they knew what was involved with the challenges of running a restaurant, and were anxious to also meet the challenges of working together for the first time. Having met while attending Johnson & Wales University (then college) in 1985, Barbara then went on to enjoy working at The Hynes Convention Center, The Rhode Island Convention Center and the international jewelry manufacturing association, MJSA in Providence. Randy spent the last 12 years as the General Manager of the Agawam Hunt in East Providence. They had moved to Mattapoisett the previous year and realized this was a great opportunity to become a part of their new community.
Jump ahead almost four years later: since The Nest Diner is open only two nights a week for dinner, and with the business of making and selling chocolate long being a part of the St.John family legacy, Barbara and Randy saw the perfect opportunity to use the diner kitchen for a new project and Sweet Memories Handmade Chocolates was born. Using some tried and true recipes and (still) creating new ones, Sweet Memories Handmade Chocolates is enjoying its second year of operation.
Nowadays, not only are Sweet Memories made into chocolate, but long lasting memories are made when you choose The Nest Diner to celebrate family events also. Either at the diner or at your home, Sweet Memories Catering and events offers a wide selection of traditional favorites or a customized menu to meet your needs.
So remember, whether its fresh eggs cracked to order while sitting in an authentic 1954 Mountain View Diner or an omelet station in your home for your next party, Sweet Memories are made with The Nest Diner.
